Transit
Publicly shared vehicles that provide transportation on fixed or flexible routes, including full-size, express and regional buses or commuter vans as well as light, heavy and commuter rail. Regionally, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (the T) and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) make up the bulk of available transit options.

Carpool
Two or more people commuting to work or other destinations together in a private vehicle. Most transportation authorities (such as DART and the T) have ride matching programs to help link up drivers with destinations and timelines convenient to each person.

Vanpool
A vanpool is a group of at least seven people who share the costs of getting to and from work. These individuals usually live and work near each other. Generally, vanpools will have one primary driver and one alternate driver. Vehicles are often provided by a local transit authority, nonprofit group or employer.

Bicycling/Walking
Improving air quality for all and your health at the same time, bicycling or walking to work, if feasible, is the most beneficial of all commute alternatives. The Dallas-Fort Worth area has a large network of bicycling routes and well-maintained sidewalks for pedestrians choosing to walk to work, making biking or walking to work a convenient alternative to driving.

Parking Cash-Out
A program that compensates you for not using a parking space at your workplace. Because space is often a premium with employers, they may have a program that rewards employees for not driving their cars to work, saving parking spaces and helping air quality at the same time.

Teleworking
Often called telecommuting, this program allows you to avoid traffic congestion altogether, working off-site for your employer from home or on the road. Teleworking is becoming more common and preferential as increasing technologies meet the needs of off-site employees and employers.

Alternative Work Schedules
Also known as variable work hours, they are typically organized into areas of compressed work weeks (more hours per day, but fewer days per week), staggered shifts and flextime alternatives where employees work the same hours each week but are given the flexibility of arrival, departure and lunch times.

Guaranteed Ride Home
In conjunction with commute alternatives mentioned above, allows participants a means of travel in emergency situations by subsidized taxi rides or use of company vehicles.
